Day 7: Spread the Word Saturday

1. Consumption - What did you consume today?

Water: caprisuns, coffee, washed hands, flushed toilet
Food: sushi, ramen, avocado bubble tea
Electricity: phone, iPod, lights, xbox 360, TV, computer
Gasoline: none
Money: none

2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources?

I didn’t shower today to save water, but that was basically it. It was lazy Saturday, which meant splurging on electricity…whoops. But I totally spread the word.

3. Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term? Can you reduce your consumption permanently? Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples.

I don’t have to shower everyday so that reduces my water consumption. I had like no food today and I’m still hungry. I also am wearing a very warm cashmere sweater and the heat isn’t on, so I’m being resourceful :)

4. Peers - What did you learn from following the tumblr feed of your peers? Did one person’s actions resonate with you in a positive way? Will you adjust your own actions as a result of their post?

I think many of us want to get this over with, and I feel the same way. Looking back, I realize what I could easily be cutting back on just to save a few bucks. I also see where I can try to reduce my electricity or water usage. I think this challenge opened up everyone’s eyes, no matter if they continue to reduce their resources, or if they continue to indulge in the first world lifestyle.

Day 6: Foodless Friday

1. Consumption - What did you consume today?

Water: full camelbak, washed hands, flushed toilet
Food: gum, whopper candy, strawberry milk, chicken patty, tater tots, oreos, arizona iced tea, gingerale, nachos, chalupa, taco
Electricity: phone, iPod, lights, xbox 360, TV
Gasoline: my dad drove me to the train in the morning (took five minutes), took public transportation/train, got a car ride home
Money: $40.00

2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources?

I think I failed this part. I ate so much because I was at a birthday party and was starving all day. However, I didn’t shower today so I reduced my water usage. I spent $40 as a gift.

3. Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term? Can you reduce your consumption permanently? Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples.

I don’t have to shower everyday so that reduces my water consumption. I also never spend this much money, or eat this much food, so I guess it’s okay.

4. Peers - What did you learn from following the tumblr feed of your peers? Did one person’s actions resonate with you in a positive way? Will you adjust your own actions as a result of their post?

I saw that some people want this challenge to be over and it’s becoming a little monotonous. However some people have been going strong on this challenge and using blankets instead of turning on the heat tonight.

Day 5: Technology Thursday

1. Consumption - What did you consume today?

Water: full camelbak, washed hands, flushed toilet, 10 minute shower
Food: a smore poptart, strawberry milk, chicken patty, apple crisp amd whipped cream, tater tots, porkchops and rice, caprisun
Electricity: phone, iPod, lights, opened my fridge
Gasoline: my dad drove me to the train in the morning (took five minutes), took public transportation/train, got a car ride home from the train station back home
Money: none

2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources?

I didn’t turn my computer on because I didn’t need to use it for homework. I also don’t think there’s any heat on, and instead of turning it on I’m in my blanket with a hoodie. And yesterday I didn’t shower to save water.

3. Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term? Can you reduce your consumption permanently? Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples.

I can continue not turning my computer on as soon as I get home because it wastes energy and makes me procrastinate. I can make this a routine because it benefits me in the long run.

4. Peers - What did you learn from following the tumblr feed of your peers? Did one person’s actions resonate with you in a positive way? Will you adjust your own actions as a result of their post?

Mr. G showed my page in class and it was pretty swag :) I have also noticed that people are turning off lights when they are no longer in the room and making it a habit. I also saw people wearing layers instead of turning their heat up to 70 degrees.

Water Footprint Calculator

since we did that water-consumption experiment, I found this cute national geographic counter that measures how much water you use in your household. It was pretty cool :)

When I told my friend how hard it was to take short showers, she proposed that I take a normal length shower every other day instead. My extremely first-world reaction:

Day 4: Waterless Wednesday

1. Consumption - What did you consume today?

Water: half a camelbak, washed hands, flushed toilet
Food: a bite of apple turnover, sip of starbucks coffee, granola bar, tater tots (basically ate like nothing today)
Electricity: phone, iPod, lights, opened my fridge
Gasoline: my dad drove me to the train in the morning (took five minutes), took public transportation/train, then took the bus on the way back home
Money: none

2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources?

I haven’t gone on the computer yet since I don’t need to, and I haven’t used my television in over four days. I don’t think I’ll shower tonight for the sake of waterless wednesday :)

3. Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term? Can you reduce your consumption permanently? Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples.

I don’t watch my tv that often anyway. I can also refrain from going on the computer when I don’t need to. I think this can be a permanent change to cut back on electricity as well as help me stop procrastinating.

4. Peers - What did you learn from following the tumblr feed of your peers? Did one person’s actions resonate with you in a positive way? Will you adjust your own actions as a result of their post?

More of the same thing, to be honest, now that we are halfway through with this challenge (that has still yet to be renamed). Many people who drive/take the bus started to walk to places and I thought that was pretty awesome, since I am the laziest person when it comes to walking places. I think I could try it every now and then.

Day 3: Try Harder Tuesday

1. Consumption - What did you consume today?

Water: full camelbak, twenty minute shower, washed hands, flushed toilet
Food: bag of popcorn, pretzel sticks, rice and soup, biscuits
Electricity: computer, phone, iPod, lights, opened my fridge, stove
Gasoline: my dad drove me to the train in the morning (took five minutes), took public transportation/train, then took the bus on the way back home
Money: $0.50 for chips (I hadn’t eaten anything since last night so I bought something at lunch)

2. Reduction - In what areas of your current lifestyle did you try to scale back the use of specific resources?

I went on the Facebook once for homework. I didn’t listen to my iPod on the way home. I would have reduced my shower time, but there was a tick on me earlier today and I wanted to be clean ):

3.  Sustainability - Are there any changes that you made to your daily routine that you could envision making for the long term?  Can you reduce your consumption permanently?  Why or why not? Please be specific, and provide examples.

I cut back on my iPod usage, and I hated listening to other people’s conversations. I don’t think I will continue this. I definitely will stick to reducing my shower time, but this was a special occasion, I guess (if you could call it that). My computer is usually on for a long time but I usually shut off my monitor if I leave the room to save energy (same with lights).

4. Peers - What did you learn from following the tumblr feed of your peers? Did one person’s actions resonate with you in a positive way?  Will you adjust your own actions as a result of their post?

I definitely agree with Shoshanna’s post yesterday about us not living in a third world. It is virtually impossible, unless we want to starve to death, but that is against Mr. G’s rules. Everyone is reducing their shower time and I will definitely stick with that. I’m becoming aware of my consumption, and I think everyone is finding out that they are doing that too.
